Don't Rain on My Disney Vacation!

Rain, Rain, Go Away…it’s my Disney Vacation!

Any day is a good day to go to Walt Disney World as far as I’m concerned. I’ve been there in pure downpours, even when there has been lightening and tornado warnings. So in this blog entry, let me share what I have learned from how to be prepared for rain and what you can do in the Parks…not all the rides shut down luckily.

First, it’s not a crazy thing to do, but have a plan ( – a good idea even when it’s sunny). Rainy days can be great days for touring through Walt Disney World. Rain means smaller crowds as most guests decide to avoid going to the Parks. So this means the attractions have shorter lines! Most of the lines for the rides are covered and the majority of the rides are indoors. Only a few of the attractions are closed due to rain. So plan to go to the rides that will be open. Your best bet will be in the Magic Kingdom.

The rides that will be closed are the ones that clearly involve water – Splash Mountain, Jungle Cruise or the rides that are entirely outdoors - Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Dumbo, Big Thunder Mountain – at the Magic Kingdom; Test Track at EPCOT. Come back to these rides later when it has stopped raining. Avoid Animal Kingdom, most of the animals aren’t active, most of the attractions aren’t going to be operating anyway (River Rapids, Everest). Avoid Disney Springs – it’s shopping outdoors although Splitsville will likely be crowded.

Be Prepared. This is where the ponchos you purchased from the Dollar Store at home really come in handy. If going to out, I suggest, packing a couple of pairs of dry socks in plastic bags to change into; who likes wet feet all day. As for phones, cameras or other electronics, put them in a plastic bag or waterproof case (not necessarily your pocket).

Go Eat. Typically in the summer in Florida, rainstorms tend to pop up between 1 - 4pm in the afternoon. Plan your a break around this time and go have lunch! Stay in the Parks or have a long meal at one of the resorts or at Disney Springs.

Will it be fun? Depends on how much you like the rain, getting wet, and of course how long the rain lasts…in Florida, rain storms will pop up and end quickly/after 45 minutes. Just wait it out while every one else leaves the Park. After all, every storm eventually runs out of rain.

Personally, you will find me at Pirates of the Caribbean (a nice indoor ride) or at one of the resort’s Character meals. I refuse to let a little (or a lot of) rain dampen my day!
